Dragon Ball Super is a Japanese manga and anime series, which serves as a sequel to the original Dragon Ball manga, with its overall plot outline written by franchise creator Akira Toriyama. The manga is illustrated by Toyotarou, with story and editing by Toriyama, and began serialization in Shueisha's shōnen manga magazine V Jump in June 2015. The anime television series was produced by Toei Animation, with individual episodes written by different screenwriters, and aired on Fuji TV from July 2015 to March 2018. A theatrical film instalment titled Dragon Ball Super: Broly was released in December 2018. The series chronicles the adventures of Goku during the ten-year timeskip after the defeat of Majin Buu. Following a retelling of the events of the films Battle of Gods and Resurrection 'F', where Goku attains the powers of a god, he must learn to use these newly discovered powers under the gods of his universe.

The series picks up six months after the defeat of Majin Buu[n 1] with Goku settling at a farm with his new family.
The God of Destruction Beerus awakens from a thousand year slumber following a dream he had of a “Super Saiyan God”. When researching Earth, he discovers the Super Saiyan Goku and confronts him, but manages to ultimately overpower Goku despite the latter using his Super Saiyan transformations. With the help of the eternal dragon Shenron, Goku learns he must conduct a ritual consisting of six pure-hearted Saiyans to transform into the Super Saiyan God, which he successfully completes, and heads to battle Beerus across the world. Despite Beerus still being able to overpower Goku, Beerus decides to spare the planet for Goku’s efforts and claims Goku as his second strongest fighter he had ever fought. Sometime later, Goku and Vegeta train on Beerus’ world with Whis while back on Earth, the remnants of Frieza’s army use the Dragon Balls to restore the remaining parts of Frieza. After his restoration, Frieza plots his revenge invasion on Earth. Goku and Vegeta just arrive in time. Frieza reveals his new Golden form to the Saiyans, who have also unlocked a new transformation known as “Super Saiyan Blue”, a mix of Super Saiyan and Super Saiyan God and overpower Frieza. Fuelled by anger, Frieza sacrifices himself by firing a ki blast through Earth. Just as Frieza does so, Whis saves Goku and his friends and gives Goku a second chance to kill Frieza again by using his ability to reverse time.
Goku and Vegeta meet Beerus’ brother Champa from an alternate universe known as Universe 6. While there, Whis explains to the Saiyans about the multiverse and how there are 12 respective universes and that the designated universe where they are from is known as Universe 7. When Champa learns his Earth was destroyed, he declares a tournament between his universe and Beerus’ with the prize being the Super Dragon Balls that Champa intends on using to revive his Earth. At the climax of the penultimate fight between Goku and Hit, Hit manages to overpower Goku prompting the latter to forfeit, leaving it to Universe 7’s remaining champion Monaka against Hit. Although Hit decides to forfeit as well after realising Monaka isn’t a fighter, leaving Universe 7 at victory. By the end of the tournament, the Omni-King arrives to announce a tournament of all universes known as the Tournament of Power.
Meanwhile, in an alternate future timeline, Future Trunks goes back in time to the present to get help from Goku and his friends to fight against an evil version of Goku called Goku Black. Goku, Beerus, and Whis learn that Goku Black is actually the Supreme Kai of Universe 10 named Zamasu, who used the Super Dragon Balls to steal Goku’s body from another timeline and obtain immortality which he plans to use to exterminate all mortals. Goku, and Vegeta assist Trunks by travelling to the future and face Zamasu there. Goku and Vegeta use the Potara Rings, given by their Supreme Kai, to become Vegito for an hour. Zamasu fuses with Goku Black in an attempt to destroy reality. Eventually, the fused Zamasu is erased from existence by the Omni-King of the future timeline. As the future timeline being erases, Goku takes the future Omni-King to be friends with the Omni-King of his time.
Goku recruits Vegeta, his son Gohan, Piccolo, Androids 17 & 18, Tien, and Master Roshi for the Tournament of Power. When their intended recruit Buu becomes unavailable to fight, Goku turns to Frieza and temporarily revives him from Hell. The tournament’s declared rules are that fighter’s aren’t allowed to fly, use weapons in any form, and when all fighters are out of the team, their respective universe is erased. During the universe, Goku’s team come across the Pride Troopers, a formidable group of warriors from Universe 11, lead by Jiren. As Jiren overpowers Goku, the latter briefly taps into a power known as Ultra Instinct but is unable to control it. Despite not being able to control it, Goku uses Ultra Instinct again against Kefla - a fusion between Universe 6 Saiyans Caulifla and Kale, whom he manages to eliminates. In the remaining minutes of the tournament, only Goku, Frieza, and Jiren are left standing prompting Goku and Frieza to join forces and fight against Jiren. All three are eliminated and Android 17 is revealed to be the only survivor, resulting in Universe 7 as victorious. In the aftermath of the Tournament of Power, Android 17 uses the Super Dragon Balls to restore all the eliminated universes as the Omni-King predicted the winner of the tournament would use the Super Dragon Balls for, while Frieza is restored permanently by Whis for participating in the tournament. During his search for Earth’s Dragon Balls, Frieza runs into two exiled Saiyans Broly and his father Paragus, who survived before Planet Vegeta’s destruction and the latter wanting revenge on Vegeta’s father. Frieza takes them to Earth to reveal Vegeta and commands Broly to attack him and Goku. Broly overpowers Goku and Vegeta, prompting the latter two to fuse into “Gogeta”, who in turn overpowers Broly using Super Saiyan Blue. Broly retreats back to the planet he was exiled on where Goku formally introduces himself using his Saiyan name “Kakarot” before challenging him again one day.
When a Galactic Patrol fugitive named Moro, who has the ability to extract all life force from worlds, escapes their captivity, they request Goku, Vegeta, and Buu’s help recapture Moro. Located on New Namek, Moro uses the Namekian Dragon Balls to restore his abilities and free all Galactic Patrol prisoners. Moro leads the released captives on a rampage across the universe while Goku seeks out to master Ultra Instinct and Vegeta goes to the planet Yardrat. Two months later, Moro leads his army Earth as Goku and his alles stand against him just before Vegeta returns with his new abilities to overpower Moro. Moro then fuses with Earth threatening to self destruct and destroy the universe. However, Goku absorbs Vegeta’s energy and new power and slays Moro. Returning to Beerus’ world for extensive training, Whis assists Goku in maintaining Ultra Instinct’s full power as Beerus teaches Vegeta the ways of desteuction. Meanwhile, a Cerelian mercenary known as Granolah retrieves the remains of the Moro released Galactic Patrol prisoners and hands them to his employees known as the Heeters. From the Heeters, Granolah learns Frieza is alive and vows to become stronger than him so that he can kill Frieza for destroying his homeworld Cereal. To do so, he uses Cerealian Dragon Balls to make his wish come true at the cost of his lifespan leaving him only three years to live. Unbeknownst to Granolah, the Heeter manipulate Goku and Vegeta into fighting Granolah.
